Pros and Cons of CMS Systems

What is CMS? It's short for "Content Management System" and was loosely built to make life easier for corporations with extensively large websites to keep the pages organized and easy to manage (a very basic explanation...). It has since morphed into a way for anyone to be able to actually update these pages too, using a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor.

Content Management Systems come in many forms - some of the more popular of late are Blogs such as WordPress. Others are more sophisticated systems such as Drupal and Joomla. They are all software systems that run on a server and are managed through a web browser.

This article is to help those conteplating whether they should build/update their website in a CMS system or not. I address the pros and cons and leave it to you to decide! If I've missed anything for either column, I'd be happy to add your thoughts.

Pros Cons
  • The flexibility to update your own site
  • Don't have to pay someone to do it for you
  • The freedom to write the content in your words
  • Don't have to wait for a web developer to do your requested updates
  • Have the freedom to arrange content on the page as you like
  • Keeps pages organized and can move them around
  • You don't have to know HTML or CSS to do the updates
  • Initial investment is more costly to build website. What's the Return on your investment?
  • Takes you away from your core competancy; what are you worth per hour?
  • Takes more time to learn and do than someone who knows what they're doing
  • Lose the benefit of a web developer's expertise in formatting and wording specific for websites
  • Lose the benefit of an expert's opinion in ways to improve the marketing function of the site
  • Forces you to learn another skill (how to write for the web)
  • Need to understand image manipulation and optimization
  • Need required tools for image manipulation and optimization
  • WYSIWYG editors tend to be buggy and hard to get the layout to look exactly as you want
  • Lost quality in the website code due to WYSIWYG limitations
  • Lost quality could result in:
    • search engine rankings going down
    • Text and layout design not transferring to other's computers (cross platform and browser problems)
    • Loss of clients and sales due to site not looking professional
